Stephen Kapoor of Eyenigma teamed up with Juma, a fashion company based out of New York City that creates unisex, progressive ready-to-wear and accessories using their own digital prints inspired by art and travel, at Fashion Week this past September. According to Kapoor, Juma chose Eyenigma based on the fact that Eyenigma’s eyewear is unique.
“We have colourful designs and we pay a lot of attention to temple details, and of course every frame has a theme to it,” says Kapoor, whose company is based in Toronto.
Jamil Juma, one of the founders of Juma, says he met Stephen from Eyenigma through a colleague and found his work very unique and interesting. “Then we thought using Eyenigma's colourful eyewear would bring another layer to the runway. We were happy with the collaboration and feel the aesthetic, and the vibe felt right. After the show, a lot of editors made comments about not seeing much eyewear on runways in the past and some even requested pairs after the show, which is a good sign. Because of that [feedback] we thought the merging of his eyewear [with our clothing] is a good direction for us.”
Kapoor featured two collections on the runway, Eyenigma and Alüm, a new fully aluminum, handmade, Japanese collection (that debuted in Las Vegas in September 2011) that has rubber on the temples. “It’s a bit of a thicker, retro looking collection; it’s extremely light and unique. We had ten models, eight that wore the frames, and two of the models had the frames hanging on a bag or something like that, as an accessory. The models came out with bags, shoes, the Juma clothing, and the eyewear,” says Kapoor.
