Nordic Naturals hosted a lecture on omega-3 fish oil and ocular health entitled Eye Health and Wellness: Fish Oil and Beyond at Vision Expo West this past September. The lecture was given by Dr. Ann Hoscheit, OD, F.A.A.O., F.A.A.R.M. A recognized writer, speaker and researcher, Dr. Ann M. Hoscheit is a leader in the field of eye and vision health. Dr. Hoscheit was recognized this year by Vision Monday in the article “40 Women with Vision” as being one of the most influential women in the optical industry.
Participants had an opportunity to review known ocular conditions impacted by the nutritional state of the body, and through case studies learned the basics of prescribing dietary changes and nutritional support for patients with ocular inflammation (including dry eye syndrome), macular degeneration, and optic neuropathies, such as glaucoma.
The omega-3 DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is more concentrated in eye tissue than in any other part of the body, and is vital to the structure and function of healthy eyes. Omega-3s promote ocular health by protecting eyes from age-related and oxidative damage; supporting the production of natural anti-inflammatory molecules; and maintaining fluid and flexible ocular cell membranes. Supplementing with omega-3s has shown to help alleviate common symptoms of eye discomfort, such as dryness, pain, and redness.
