Retro had to go somewhere, and New York’s Modo Eyewear is pushing it to a logical extreme with the Philip Lim Donahue frames. The frames riff on the navigator style, but they’ve blown up the the features and played with the angles to create a new look. The brow bar is straighter and more architectural, the top eyewire chunky and heavy. That long, metal brow bar contrasts with the black or tortoise acetate of the eyewire.
Lending his name to the frames, which are available with ophthalmic or sun lenses, is Philip Lim, the Thai-born, American fashion designer who, by his own description, strives to make beautiful clothes “with added touches of madness, striving toward the imperfection.” Such creations take a particular person to wear, but the bold play on the retro trend is likely to mean those particular people and these particular frames will meet and fall in love.
